The coves along the coast of Begur, between Aiguablava and Sa Riera, are said to be the most beautiful of the Costa Brava. The bays of Aiguablava (named after the intense blue water), Sa Tuna (our local beach), and Sa Riera are frequently cited as the best examples of what the Costa Brava has to offer.
The medieval town of Begur is built around the ruins of a 15th century hilltop fortress which remains the main landmark of the town until today. The views from the old parapet are exceptional: on a clear day you can see the snow-capped Pyrenes, 180 degrees of brilliant blue sea, the bay of Pals, and the Medas islands with France just beyond. The town itself is a maze of winding streets and porticoed galleries with a charming square where you can while away the day drinking coffee and soaking up the sun.
The striking silhouette of the medieval castle overlooking the town, its numerous colonial-style houses, the layout and profile of the streets and alleys of the old town and the old fishermen's huts still conserved in the coves testify to a long and varied history in which pirates, sailors, coral gatherers, fishermen, wealthy emigrants returning from overseas, and entire generations of Begur townspeople have populated this area which, despite the inevitable changes, has still not lost its roots and historic identity.
Between Begur and the Mediterranean, nestled in the hills above the cove of Sa Tuna, is the quiet neighbourhood of La Borna. With dramatic steep hillsides that drop into the sea at all angles, La Borna has managed to maintain a superb balance of quiet natural surroundings, beautiful properties and superb views. It is this formula, along with its location, that makes it such a sought after location.
